Chapter 18: The Loading Dock
The buyer hung up before I could answer.
I sat on the edge of the bed with the phone in my lap.
Behind me Clive said, without opening his eyes, "Who calls at seven on a Sunday?"
"The buyer."
He opened his eyes and read my face.
"Then go alone," he said. "I'll be in the car with the doors locked, pretending I'm not a lawyer."
"You're not a lawyer. You're a man with a futon."
"Even better. Nobody subpoenas a futon."
At five fifty on Monday the sky over Canton was the color of dishwater.
The day shift was coming through the gate with hard hats and lunch coolers.
They'd all had my father's email.
Nobody said anything. One man spat to the side, not quite at me.
The buyer was standing on the dock by bay four, where Marigold had slapped me.
He was younger than I'd expected, in a navy quarter-zip, with two coffees in a tray.
"Ms. Cromwell." He handed me one. "Thank you for coming."
"You said before my father."
"He's due at seven. I like to talk to the person who actually decides." He smiled. "That's you, isn't it?"
"Talk."
