My father found his voice before anyone else around the pool did.
"That woman will never sit at my table."
"It won't be your table on October fifth," I said. "Check the clock on your desk."
Marigold stood very still on the wet tiles in her white swimsuit.
I walked out the side gate.
Clive was leaning on my Honda at the curb, where I'd told him to wait, eating a peach.
"Well?" he said.
I took the peach out of his hand and bit it.
"That bad?" he said.
"That good."
He opened the driver's door for me and got in the passenger side.
"My mother called," he said. "She wants you at her table October third. Last crabs of the season."
"Your mother hates me now. I'm the woman in the magazine."
"She read it and called me a word I'd never heard her say. She owes you a crab. And me a smack."
His mother's rowhouse in Dundalk had a white aluminum awning and geraniums on the stoop.
I'd eaten Sunday dinners there for two years.
I hadn't been back since the July he left.
She opened the door in an apron before we knocked.
