Chapter 21: On Camera

The camera light swung toward us as we came around the stoop.

Marigold turned, and her face did something I'd watched it do since she was four.

It found the camera, and it softened.

"Clive," she said. "Oh, thank God."

The reporter, a woman in a trench coat with a station logo on her microphone, stepped into the light beside her.

"Mr. Mercer, Marigold Mercer has asked us here tonight. She says she has something to say to you."

The front door opened behind Marigold.

Clive's mother stood in it in her apron, a crab mallet in her hand.

"What's all this?" she said.

Marigold ignored her.

She came down two steps toward Clive, in pink, holding up his ring.

"I made a terrible mistake," she said, eyes already wet. "I let my sister get in your head."

Clive didn't say anything.

My hand was still in his. He didn't let go of it.

"I'm withdrawing the petition," Marigold said. "Monday morning. Come home, babe."

She held the ring out at arm's length, the way she'd held her flute out at me across the head table.

"And the money comes home with you," she said, quieter. "All of it. Daddy drops the car. You get your seat back."
