Chapter 27: The Ballroom
"Thursday," Clive said into my hair. "I'm writing it down."
"You don't have anything to write on."
"I'll write it on you."
On Thursday at four fifty-eight I stood in the service corridor behind the hotel ballroom with my phone in my hand.
Odessa stood beside me with a licorice rope and her red glasses on.
The screen showed the company's operating account.
No wire from my father. Not a dollar of the wedding back.
At five o'clock the hotel's hallway clock clicked over.
Odessa took the licorice out of her mouth.
"Well," she said. "That's two more blocks."
I sent the notice to the company secretary at five-oh-one.
Through the wall six hundred chairs were scraping, and somebody's baby was crying.
The ballroom was all mirrors and crystal, and he'd filled it with drivers and dispatchers in their church clothes.
On the stage, a long table in white linen for the directors, and a podium with the company's anchor on the front.
My father stood behind it in his navy blazer.
Marigold sat at his right in black, very straight, her hair pulled back hard.
She didn't look at me when I took my seat at the far end of the table.
