Chapter 17: All Three

The door opened a hand's width and stopped.

A long dark shape had stepped into the gap from the corridor side, and a large hand lay flat on the oak.

"Madam," said Raven.

Mary's voice came through, soft and surprised.

"Raven, dear. I thought I heard a noise."

"It was me."

"You?"

"I talk in my sleep. In the passage." A pause. "I have been told."

Joel, still lying on top of Max with his eyes shut, made a strangled sound into Max's collarbone that was either a cough or a laugh.

"I only wanted to see that my son was well," said Mary.

"He is sleeping. I am guarding him."

"Against what?"

"Whatever comes."

The silence lasted a long time.

Then the keys chimed once, lightly, and Mary said, "How lucky he is to have so many friends," and went away down the corridor with her slippers whispering on the stone.

Raven pushed the door open, came in, and shut it behind him.

He looked at the two men on the bed.

He looked at the key on the floor.

Then he picked it up, put it back in the lock, and turned it.

"She had a needle," he said.

"She always has a needle," said Max.

"The clerk is at the east window. He logged one man tonight." Raven's green eyes went to Joel. "And I think he logged you."

Three light taps sounded on the oak.

"It's only me," said a voice from the corridor.

Raven turned the key back, opened the door a hand's width, and James slipped through the gap in his shirt and nothing else, with his hair on end.

Raven locked it again behind him.

"I heard the key fall," he said. "Also the headboard. Also Joel. The whole east wing heard Joel."

Joel sat up so fast he hissed.

"Out," he said. "Both of you."

"Tonight was yours," Raven said. "Tomorrow is James's." He opened his book. "I made a schedule."

"You made a schedule?"

"Three columns."

"I made one too," said James. "Mine has drawings."

"He is not a ledger," said Joel. "He's a person."

"Enough," said Max.

They stopped.

He swung his legs off the bed and stood, bare and still half in the Domain, and looked at the three of them.
