Chapter 14: The First Name

I went down the hall to his room with my phone in my hand.

I had made a rule that neither of us lied, and I was not going to be the first to break that one either.

Marcello stood at the window in his shirtsleeves, looking at the ice on the lake.

He turned when I came in, and I held the phone out.

"Roxanne called," I said. "Nine o'clock tomorrow, alone, with every copy. Or her sister's oxygen goes off."

He listened to the whole thing without moving.

"No," he said.

"I wasn't asking."

"You're not going in there."

"Then you'll have to tie me to the bed, Marcello."

"June."

The muscle in his jaw jumped.

He crossed the room and stopped an arm's length away.

"She's lying to you again," he said. "It's the same hand on the same puppet string. You walk in alone, and you don't walk out."

"And if she isn't lying?"

"Then a woman dies on a bed, and it's not on you."

"It would be on me."

"You're a nurse, not a god."

"She's a patient," I said. "I'm going."

We were shouting by then, quietly, which is how his family does it.

He said I was reckless.

I said he had taught me to be.

He said, "Every day I wake up and wonder whether the yes you gave me was just a way into my house."

I stopped.

"I put that ring on you fourteen months ago," he said. "And in the chapel I found out you were holding a weapon under your flowers. What was I supposed to think the ring was?"
