The woman at the inn asked whether we wanted one room or two.
Pippa looked at me.
I looked at Pippa.
"One," we said together.
The woman turned a key on its ring and put it on the counter.
Neither of us touched it.
She glanced between our faces.
"I can have somebody show you up."
"No," I said quickly.
"The key's fine."
I picked it up, holding the large plastic tag instead of the metal.
Pippa took the bag from my other hand.
The tag said ROOM FOUR and carried an advertisement for a local plumber.
I had never found commercial printing so reassuring.
Elaine stood behind us with her case.
"I assumed we'd have adjoining rooms."
"You can ask about one for yourself," Pippa said.
"We haven't booked yours."
My aunt looked at the woman behind the counter, who slid a price list toward her.
