Chapter 13: Her Mother's Stone

On the twelfth I went home for an hour.

Dorian said I had the right.

"You're a Blood Moon wolf until the first," he said. "Nobody can lock a gate on a wolf visiting her dead."

He sent four Iron Hollow wolves with me.

They stopped at the fence and looked bored on purpose.

The pack stones stand behind the hall, in a square of grass, with one stone for every wolf we've lost.

My parents' stone was near the back, grey granite with SWINBURNE cut across the top.

Garrick had paid for it the week they died, and he had never once told me.

I knelt and laid my good hand flat on my mother's name.

The granite was cold and damp.

"I don't know what to do," I told her. "You always knew."

Boots crossed the grass behind me, three pairs.

I stayed where I was.

"Look who came home," a woman said.

I stood up and turned around.

They were Delphine's friends from the Tuesday sewing circle, three women my age.

I had eaten dinner with all of them.

The tall one stood in front, with her arms folded.

"Did Ketch let you off the leash?"

"I'm visiting my parents."

"You're visiting a man who isn't yours," said the one on my left. "Eight years at the Alpha's table, and you repay him by running off to Iron Hollow."

"Delphine hasn't slept in three nights," the third said. "She sewed your dress."
