Chapter 20: Boardroom
The Kinnear boardroom was on the fourteenth floor, at the end of the hall past vendor accounts.
It had a long walnut table, nine leather chairs and a window full of the river.
I was there at a quarter to nine, and so was everyone else.
My stepmother sat at the far end in navy, with her hands folded on a leather portfolio.
Four gray outside directors sat along one side and couldn't look at my father.
My father sat at the head in his best gray suit.
Danielle sat in a chair against the wall, because she wasn't a director.
She'd been asked to present.
She wore white today, not pink, and a thin gold chain with nothing on it.
Damiano had stayed in the lobby, because Bruna said a gangster in a boardroom was a gift to the other side.
"This meeting was called by a director," my stepmother said, "under section six of the bylaws."
"The motion is to suspend Clifton Kinnear as chief executive, pending the outcome of his criminal case."
"Seconded," said one of the gray men, to the table.
"Before we vote," my stepmother said, "Danielle has prepared a statement for the board. She's been very brave."
