Chapter 24: Danielle Calls

I was out of bed and down the hall before Damiano could catch my arm.

The door of the blue room stood half open.

My father lay on his back in the lamplight with his reading glasses on his chest, snoring.

The little television on the dresser was playing a Cubs replay with the sound off.

I stood in the doorway and listened to him breathe until my own breathing matched it.

Damiano came up behind me with a gun in his hand and the gauze pink on his side.

He looked past me at my father.

Then he went to the window, looked down at the street and spoke one sentence into his phone.

By the time I'd made coffee, two of his men sat on the front steps.

A third stood under the blue room window, smoking.

"He'll see them," I said.

"I want him to see them," Damiano said.

At seven my father came down in his robe and found three of us staring at him.

"What?" he said. "Did the Sox win?"

His phone buzzed in his robe pocket before anyone could answer.

He looked at the screen and his face shut.

"Dani," he said.

He listened for a few seconds.

Then he held the phone out to me across the table without a word.
