Chapter 32: This Time
"Your father texted me too," Bruna said at breakfast on Saturday. "He says that like ordering people around has ever worked."
"It worked on my mother," I said.
"Your mother married a Sox fan. She clearly didn't argue enough."
It was the sixteenth of May, and I was twenty-seven years old.
The kitchen on Oakley Avenue smelled of coffee and burnt toast.
Bruna stood at the counter eating cereal out of the box.
The quiet one sat by the window reading the sports page.
The driver was frying eggs badly at the stove, because it was his turn.
Damiano came in from the garden with dirt on his knees and Bruna's kitchen scissors in his hand.
He held them out to me, handles first.
"What's this?"
"The tree," he said. "It's still wrapped."
"It's May. Your father's day is June eleventh."
"You told me in this kitchen that his system was terrible," Damiano said. "It'll cook in there. You pick the day now."
I looked at the scissors.
Then I got up, slowly, with one hand on the table and one on my stomach, and went out the back door in my robe.
The whole kitchen came out after me.
The fig tree stood in the morning sun in its burlap, and one green shoot had pushed out through the weave at the top.
