Chapter 14: The Spoon
Soyul didn't remember crossing the palace.
She remembered the snow going into her shoes, and her breath tearing, and the red Inner Gate coming up out of the dark.
The barracks yard behind it was full of torchlight.
Forty guards stood in four lines in the snow for the evening muster, spears grounded.
Captain Kang stood in front of them.
Councillor Jo stood in front of him.
Soyul stopped in the shadow of the gate with her hand pressed to her side.
The clerk stood behind the Councillor holding a lacquered tray.
On it sat a heavy silk purse and a folded paper with a red seal.
A new jade cicada hung from the clerk's belt.
"The command of the northern garrison," Councillor Jo was saying, pleasantly, so every man in the yard could hear.
"Your old post, Captain, but at the top. And a little silver for the road."
He touched the purse with the end of his fan.
"You leave tonight. The north misses you."
