Chapter 17: Dawn on the Snow
The ladder was too short.
Dalrae held the bottom of it in the dark and swore at it the whole time Soyul climbed.
From the top rung Soyul could just get her arms over the wall, between the persimmon branches.
Frozen fruit hit her in the face.
She dragged herself up onto the tiles in her skirt, and swung her legs over, and dropped.
The snow on the other side was deep.
It knocked the breath out of her, and she lay there for a moment looking at the stars going pale.
Then she got up and ran.
The snow-yard under the Gate of Rising Sun was already full.
The whole court had come out in furs and padded coats, ministers and their sons, court ladies, eunuchs, guards in their lines.
Braziers burned at the corners.
On a low platform sat the Queen Dowager in a chair with a fur rug over her knees, the king standing beside her.
Councillor Jo stood at the front of the officials with his hands in his sleeves.
In the middle of the yard, the snow had been swept into a circle.
Mujin knelt in it.
They had put him in plain white.
His hat was gone and his topknot had been taken down, and his black hair hung loose to his shoulders.
