Chapter 21: The Other Girl

The little girl stood on the stage with her hand still half raised, where his had been.

She looked up at Trenton.

Trenton was looking at the cameras.

"Daddy?"

He stepped away from her.

He walked to the edge of the stage and said something low to his lawyer.

He didn't look back.

The detectives were taking Darla out through the side door.

She was still screaming, but the doors swung shut and cut it off.

Then the hall was very quiet.

Three hundred people sat at their round tables and looked at a skinny eight-year-old in a pink dress, alone under a dinosaur.

Her bow had come loose.

Her mouth was trembling.

Somebody's phone was held up, filming.

Then another.

Mabel knew exactly what that felt like.

In her first life, she had stood at the bottom of a staircase in this girl's shadow while everyone looked past her.

Now everyone was looking straight at this girl, and nobody was coming.

Mabel walked down the stage steps.

She crossed the floor of the great hall in her ice-blue dress.

She went past the front tables, past the cameras, past the trustee with his hearing aid turned up.
