Chapter 16: Rule Three
Cressida snatched the envelope and read it twice.
"He bought the building," she said. "Tonight. For me."
"For me," said a voice from the elevator.
Christian stepped out in his dark overcoat, with a lawyer on either side of him.
He had been in the lobby the whole time.
He looked at the eight women and the red light on the tripod, and he did not look at me.
"Ms. Lyle," he said. "You have until midnight."
"You can't do that." Cressida whirled to the camera. "Do you see this? A billionaire has bought my home so he can throw me out in the street. Four hundred thousand of you are watching a woman be punished for telling the truth."
The numbers on her screen jumped.
The woman in yellow went for her coat.
"Rule three," I said.
Christian's head turned.
"I'm sorry?"
"Rule three," I said again, very quietly. "Nobody pays for anything I didn't ask for."
"I didn't buy it for you."
"You bought it because of me."
"I bought it because she threatened a girl's mother."
"And did I ask you to?"
A muscle moved in his jaw.
"No."
"I told you I'd handle her."
"You told me you'd walk into her house alone," he said. "I decided I would rather own the floor."
The women on the sofas were watching us now, and not Cressida.
I thought about every gift he had ever put in my hands.
A house in the Hamptons that I had never slept in.
A key I kept in a canvas bag.
"Christian," I said. "Look at her."
He looked.
Cressida stood in the center of her white room with her chin up and her phone in her fist, and her eyes were very bright.
