Chapter 17: The Carpet

The red carpet ran a full city block, and the photographers behind the rope began shouting my name before I was out of the car.

I wore the eighty-dollar slip dress and my mother's flat shoes.

Dorian had offered me a car, a stylist and a stranger's diamonds.

I had said no to all three, and he had put the diamonds back in the box with a grin.

"You're going to make me cry on camera," he said, at the curb.

"You're an actor. Cry on cue."

"I'm not acting."

He offered me his arm.

Posey stepped out behind me in a plain blue dress, white with nerves, and Christian and Maddox came out of the second car.

The flashes hit us all at once.

A woman near the rope shouted that she had seen the long video three times.

"You hit her back!" she called. "Good for you!"

I did not know where to look, so I waved.

"Dorian! Dorian, who is she?"

He stopped at the center of the carpet, in front of every lens in the city, and he put his hand over mine on his sleeve.

"This is Lena Prescott," he said. "She's the reason I walked off the carpet on Friday."

A roar went up from the rope.

"Is it true she paid you?" a woman called.

"She has never paid me for anything," Dorian said, and he smiled with every tooth. "She has never let me pay for anything either. It's driving me out of my mind."

The laugh ran down the whole line.

A man with a microphone leaned over the rope.

"Ms. Prescott! Who are you wearing?"
