Chapter 6: On Air
The show aired live every Friday at ten, and the night replay was only a copy of the week before.
I found that out from the station's website at six in the morning, on Shanna's laptop, with a tube of burn cream open beside it.
"He does it live, with callers," I said. "Phone lines open."
Shanna put her coffee down.
"Em, no."
"He said my sentence to a whole city, and he said I gave permission."
"Did you?"
"I never said a word to him about it. I said it to a nurse."
"I'm a nurse," Shanna said. "I said that to you. I sat on your bed that night and you said it to me, and then I told the night nurse to chart it as you'd said it, because you were looking at the wall."
I stared at her.
"I told Christian," she said. "In the hall. He asked what you'd said, and I thought he was being a husband."
Her face went gray.
"Oh, Em. I handed it to him."
"You didn't know."
"I should have."
"You were holding my hand," I said. "You didn't know."
She wiped her eyes angrily with the heel of her palm.
"Call the show," she said. "I'll make you eggs."
Luther was already on his ladder when I dialed.
He did not say anything.
He stopped hammering, and he stayed where he was, and I knew he was listening.
The line rang, and a producer picked up.
"Mind Matters, what's your name and your question?"
"I'm a caller from the east side," I said. "I'd like to talk about the case Dr. Pelham mentioned. The grief method."
