Chapter 12: The Door Stays Shut

Inside, Tucker locked the door and leaned his back against it.

"I'm going to say this one time," he said. "We can sit on the couch and watch something stupid, and I'll make you tea."

"I don't want tea."

"Then tell me what you want."

I was standing in his front hall in my coat, with my hands still shaking.

I wanted something that was mine, and nothing else on that street was.

"I want you," I said. "Tonight. No promises, and no talking about him."

His eyes went dark.

"Say it again."

"I want you to take me upstairs."

He crossed the hall in two steps.

He kissed me against the wall, with one hand under my jaw and the other flat on the small of my back, and I dragged his flannel off his shoulders.

His mouth moved down my throat while I fought with the buttons on his undershirt.

"Upstairs," he said against my skin, and he lifted me.

I locked my legs around his waist, and he carried me up, kissing me on every stair.

His bedroom was dark and plain, with one lamp on and a bed made with hospital corners.

He set me on my feet beside it.

I stood very still while he undid my coat, and my sweater, and then the clasp of my bra, so slowly that I wanted to scream.

"You're beautiful," he said.

"Don't."

"It's true."

"I haven't been touched on purpose in three years," I said, and my voice cracked. "Every time was a calendar, Tucker. A schedule and a window and a number. It stopped being about wanting anybody."

He cupped my face in both hands.

"Then tonight nobody's counting," he said. "Tell me what you like, and I'll do it."

I pushed him back onto the bed and took off the rest of my clothes myself.

He watched me do it, with his chest rising and falling.

Then I climbed over him and kissed him hard.

His hands slid down my back to my hips and gripped, and I felt how much he wanted me against my thigh, thick and hard through his jeans.
