Chapter 23: The Subaru
Maura's POV
He had the key to my back door by the Thursday after the sugarhouse, on a ring with a brass maple leaf his uncle had given him.
He had used it every night since.
On the first Friday of April I made him use mine.
"Where are we going?" he said.
"Get in the car."
"Your car?"
"My car. The green one," I said.
He got in the passenger seat of the Subaru and I drove down Lamphere Hill Road through the mud, with the wipers going and the rain coming down hard, to the middle of Barton, to Main Street, to the little gravel lot behind the Stovepipe.
It was ten o'clock at night.
The shop was dark.
Above it, one window, his, with the shade pulled halfway down and nobody home.
I parked in the corner, nose to the fence, in the exact place where I had parked on the twenty-seventh of September.
I turned the engine off.
The rain on the roof was loud and steady, and the windows fogged from the inside at once.
"Oh," he said quietly.
"Yes."
"You parked here."
"I wanted to see it from this side," I said. "I want to sit in this car with you, in this spot, and be somebody else."
He looked at me.
He looked at the dark window of his own apartment, at the rain on the glass, at the wheel where I had put my forehead six months before.
Then he unbuckled his seat belt.
"The back," I said. "I folded the seats this morning."
He glanced over his shoulder.
I had laid a quilt in the cargo bed, the old patchwork from his truck with the hole in the corner, and two pillows and a flashlight.
"You planned this," he said.
"I took notes."
He was grinning when he climbed over the console.
We crawled into the back, in a cramped, undignified scramble, with our knees knocking the headrests and the rain roaring down on the roof six inches over our heads.
