Chapter 8: Not Friends Either

Sunna parked the van and turned off the engine.

"Do you want me to stay?" she asked.

"Stay by the van," I said. "Please."

"I will stay by the van."

I walked down the beach.

The wind pushed at my back, and with each step the man in the thin coat got closer.

Cormac looked bad.

His face was gray, his eyes were red-rimmed and his collar was bent on one side.

He didn't look like the man everyone saw on camera.

He looked like someone who had slept in an airport.

"Em," he said. "God. You're really here."

"How did you find me?"

"I called the production company. I said I was a client and wanted a location tour." He tried to laugh, and it didn't work. "They gave me the beach, and a woman on the phone said you'd be on it at dawn."

"You flew eleven hours to a beach."

"I'd fly twelve." He took one step toward me, and I stayed where I was. "Come home. Please. The channel's falling apart. Every video since you left is a disaster. Cecelia's barely sleeping. The sponsors are calling every hour."

"Does Cecelia know you're here?"

"No."

"Then who asked you to come?"

"Nobody. I came for me." His voice cracked. "Em, I'm your best friend."

I looked at the sea over his shoulder.

A wave went up the black sand and slid back, and another one came behind it.
