Chapter 9: The Wind Is Strong Today
The video went up at midnight, and by breakfast it had four hundred views.
I stood at the kitchen counter with a mug and read the number twice.
"Four hundred," I said.
"Four hundred is good," Sunna said, not looking up from her toast. "Nobody knows you."
"My old channel gets that in a second."
"Your old channel had seventy million people to start with. You started with a porch." She buttered the other side. "Eat."
The producer's dog sat under the table, hoping for the crusts.
The crew trickled in for coffee, half asleep, and one of them stopped to look over my shoulder at the screen.
"That's the beach from yesterday? It looks good. It looks like a place a person would go."
"Thanks."
"Say that again, but with your face," the cameraman said, grinning, and he left.
My face was in the video only at the start and at the end.
It was windblown and red, and I had tripped over the word "basalt."
I'd left it in.
Sunna came around the counter and took my phone out of my hand.
"What are you doing?"
"I am reading your comments. Do not argue." She scrolled with her thumb. "There are nineteen. Seventeen are from people who found you by the beach tag. One is a bot selling shoes. One is long."
"Long?"
She read it out in her flat accent.
"This voice. I've heard this voice. Where have I heard this voice."
The kitchen went quiet.
Sunna scrolled down.
"Someone answered it. They say, the bloopers. Hearthlight bloopers. Every year, the behind-the-scenes reel, there is a man off camera who says, look at the lens, say it a little softer, that was perfect, take it again."
