The whole square turned to look at the troll.

Tora walked into the middle of it, and people pressed back against the fish stalls to give it room.

It stopped in front of Ryota's fish cart and lowered its huge head until its eyes were level with his.

"Good morning, Tora," Ryota said.

"Good morning," said the troll, in its voice like a cart on gravel. "A hundred carts say it every day now. Some say it twice."

The little boy on the first cart shouted it again, and the troll's mouth moved in something that might have been a smile.

The woman on the first cart raised her voice.

"Every sack of flour this city eats comes over the north bridge," she called to the square. "The nobles' bakers know it best of all."

She pointed at Ryota.

"At the Send-off the carters will put our hands on the city stone with you. The crown can hear what our bread costs."

The carters shouted behind her, a hundred voices at once.

"And Tora?" Ryota asked.

The troll turned its head slowly toward the river wall, where the herald had sat.

"Nobody spoke to me for a hundred years," it said. "You gave me a word to keep. So I will stand at your stone too."

The square was silent.

Then the man with the bandaged hand, the one who'd shouted about foreigners, cleared his throat.
