Chapter 15: The Mother
"Then pour," said the prince.
Nobody in the court understood him, and she did.
He took the bolt out of the gate with his own hand and gave it to a guard.
"Everyone back to work," he said. "The Princess is home."
He didn't touch her.
He didn't ask what she had heard.
He walked beside her across the court and into the Peony Court, and when the door closed he said only, "Tell me."
She told him.
The herbalist in the alley, the man in the lavender cord, the high table, the full dose.
When she finished he stood at the window for a long time.
"You came back," he said.
"Don't." She folded her arms. "I'm still angry. You hid a door and watched me walk past it for two weeks."
"Yes."
"I'm not done being angry."
"I did not think you would be."
"But I'm also not done with that woman." She jerked her chin toward the Dowager's court.
"She wants you dead and me hanged under clause nine."
