Chapter 20: Too Late, Alpha

Garrick looked at me, and every wolf on the shore looked at him.

I'd planned the words for three months.

I had said them to the pines, to the stove, to the ceiling over Lars's bed in the small hours.

Now that I stood on the stones with the pack waiting, they came out plain.

"Elders," I said. "Alphas. I want you to witness this."

The senior elder nodded, and the four neighboring Alphas moved up to the front.

"The bond is already gone. I bit it through myself, underwater. But a Luna's rejection is spoken in front of the pack, and mine was never spoken."

I turned to Garrick.

"Garrick Holmberg. I, Marit Lindqvist, reject you as my mate. I reject your claim on my body, my name, and my pup. You will not decide where she lives, or who she is, or whose she is."

He stood very straight.

"You broke my hand to make me confess to a thing I didn't do," I said. "You put me in the water with your child. You said you only wanted me to say it."

"I know."

"So I'm saying it, here, in front of all of them." I took a breath. "Too late, Alpha."

It was quiet enough that I could hear the water on the stones.

Garrick closed his eyes.

"Accepted," he said.

His voice cracked on it, and he opened his eyes again.

"I accept the rejection. I won't contest it before the elders or anyone."

He reached to his collar and unpinned the heavy silver crescent that marked the Holmberg Alpha.
