Chapter 15: The Griffin
The griffin girl didn't look at anybody.
She looked at the floor three feet in front of her bare toes, the way Cassius used to stand by the door in Bonding Hall.
Delphine tugged the chain and walked her down the middle of the hall.
"Papa bought her for me," she said. "For the knockouts. Three wolves and a griffin. Nobody's ever brought four partners to the sand."
She stopped at Lorne's table and noticed, finally, that nobody at it was smiling.
Lorne wasn't even sitting down.
"What happened?" she said.
Nobody told her.
I was looking at the griffin's hands.
They were gray to the wrist.
"When did you last feed her?" I said.
Delphine turned and saw me, and her smile came back on.
"Bri. Still here? I'd have thought you'd be hiding."
"When did you feed her?"
"I tried, yesterday. She bit me." Delphine held up one finger with a little bandage on it. "She's cold. She won't shift. Papa says some of them take a while to settle."
"She's starving," I said. "She won't last a match. If she drops in the knockout, you forfeit everyone you've got. Your father wrote that rule. Did he tell you?"
