Chapter 17: Warrant
They came while I was still lacing my dress.
Six Guild guards in gray-blue coats, marching up the gravel to the east dormitory in two rows.
The sergeant at the front carried a rolled paper and a set of iron cuffs.
Every window in the dormitory went up.
Cassius walked down the stairs to meet them before they could come up.
I ran after him with one boot on.
"Cassius Vire," the sergeant read, in a voice for the whole yard. "Sworn by Lord Ashlock of Ashlock House. An unlicensed dragon within the capital walls, held as stolen property and loosed upon the city."
"Stolen property," I said. "He's a person."
"He's a dragon, miss. The law says dragons in the capital carry a Guild license. He doesn't."
"He's the Lord of the Northern Reach."
The sergeant looked at the horns, and then at me, and shrugged.
"Then he can tell the hearing so."
Cassius held out his wrists.
"Don't," I said.
"If I fight six guards in front of a dormitory," he said quietly, "I'm exactly what your father told them I am."
"Then let me come."
"You have a match at noon."
"I don't care about the match."
"You do." He looked down at me. "If you don't walk onto that sand, you forfeit. That's what your father is counting on."
