Chapter 18: The Hearing
I walked into the Guild hall at five minutes to eight with a basket on my arm and a dragon on my shoulder.
The cook had packed the basket at four that morning.
Hot bricks, a folded blanket, and four eggs.
The ledger was inside my dress again, flat against my ribs.
My arm was bandaged to the elbow under my sleeve, and it throbbed every time my heart beat.
The griffin girl walked on my left with her chin up.
My roommate walked on my right with her fox and three ribbons in her hair for courage.
The hall was a high stone room with a long table at one end and benches down the sides.
The benches were full.
Half the academy had cut morning classes to come.
The Guild master sat at the middle of the long table, a heavy old man in gray-blue with spectacles on a chain.
Cassius stood in front of the table in his cuffs.
He'd slept in a cell, and there was straw in his hair, and when he saw me come through the door, his whole body went still.
My father sat at the right end of the table in his good black coat.
He didn't look at me.
He looked at the basket.
"Lord Ashlock," the Guild master said. "Your warrant. Say it again, for the room."
