Chapter 20: Final
They carried me to the shade under the benches on a stretcher.
I hated every step of it.
The cook knelt beside me with a honey cake and broke off a piece and put it in my mouth.
"Eat."
I ate.
It sat in my stomach.
Nothing came back up into my hands.
Cassius knelt on my other side in his human shape, with his shirt torn and the long new horns sweeping back from his temples.
He looked taller than ever.
He looked frightened.
"Withdraw," he said. "The Headmistress will let you. I'll go to the Guild. I'll go to the crown. We'll find another way."
"If I withdraw, I forfeit," I said. "You go to Delphine. So does she." I tipped my head at the griffin girl. "And I go back to my father's house, to whatever he signs for me next."
He opened his mouth.
He shut it.
"I'm walking out there," I said. "You can carry me if you have to."
"I'll carry you."
"Not onto the sand. They'll call it carried off."
My roommate gave a wet laugh.
Pip crawled out of her arms and into my lap, and sat on my chest, and looked into my face with her head on one side.
She chirped.
"I know," I told her. "I know."
When the horn called us, I walked.
Cassius walked beside me, close enough that I could lean on him without anyone seeing.
