Chapter 13: Green Dress

Nobody in the ballroom moved.

Six hundred people sat in their gold chairs and looked at the man at the podium.

Grayson laughed.

It was his lobby laugh, high and wrong.

"That's fake," he said into the microphone. "Come on. She's had five years to make that. She's in a lot of trouble and she's trying to drag me down with her."

"It's your number," Whitney said.

"Anybody can fake a number."

"Then you won't mind if the police look at your phone."

He didn't answer that.

He looked at me instead.

He put on the face from the rooftop, wet-eyed and wounded, the face that made a room believe him.

"Carly. You know me. You know I would never."

I stood up.

Giancarlo's hand slid off my back and stayed in the air a moment.

I walked to the front of the ballroom in Nonna's emeralds and my green dress.

The quartet had stopped playing a while ago. I could hear my own heels on the parquet.

I stopped below the stage, where he had to look down at me.

"One question," I said.

"Carly, please. Not here."

"You picked here. Your microphone. Your gala."

He gripped the podium.

"That night," I said, "I walked away from you after the tab. I went to the elevators. The car was packed with your party, so I turned around and pushed open the door to the garage."
