Chapter 19: Her Name

"No," I said into the phone. "I'm not going to fire you over the phone, and I'm not going to do it in an office."

There was a silence on the line.

"Thursday at seven," I said. "The nurses' station. Bring the same people."

On Thursday at seven, the chief of emergency medicine stood at the nurses' station in a clean white coat.

The same two residents were there. The same tech. My charge nurse leaned on the counter with her arms folded and a coffee she had no intention of drinking.

Half the night shift had found reasons to restock things nearby.

The chief cleared his throat.

"Dr. Ames," he said. "A month ago I stood here and suspended you in front of your team. I did it because of a video I didn't question and a phone that wouldn't stop ringing. I was wrong."

He held out a hand.

It wasn't steady.

"I'm sorry," he said. "To your face. In front of the same people."

I looked at his hand for a moment.

Then I shook it.

"Okay," I said.

He waited.

"That's it?" he said.

"That's it. You're a good doctor who panicked over a phone call. I've seen you run a code for ninety minutes on a kid nobody else would touch." I let go of his hand. "You're not fired. You're working Christmas."

The tech laughed out loud and didn't bother turning it into a cough.
