Chapter 19: The Coat Room

The Hall was loud with the sound of a hundred and sixty people being seated.

Long tables ran the length of the floor under paper lanterns, with candles in jars and plates of cold ham and pickled beets.

The head table stood on the stage, under the FOUNDERS banner, with a white cloth and a row of high-backed chairs.

Six chairs.

Place cards stood at five of them.

The sixth, on the left of the center, had a card that read VANG in the Council's blue pen.

I stood in the lobby in my green dress, with Cass's arm tucked through mine.

The dress was dark velvet, knee-length, with long sleeves and a square neck.

I had bought it at the church sale for eleven dollars and had it taken in by a woman on Main Street.

It fit me well.

Cass wore the black suit and a white shirt, and no tie.

He had not shaved the second time.

"Do I look all right?" he said.

"You look like a man about to be ruined."

"Ebba."

"Hush."

Dag stood at the foot of the stairs in his good flannel vest, with his braid tied in a clean leather cord.

He caught my eye over the crowd, and he lifted one giant hand and made a small fist.

I nodded.

The coat room was behind the lobby, past the kitchen, through a narrow door with a brass handle.
