Chapter 6: Paper Wings

"I don't know," I said. "Ask me in two weeks."

"Two weeks it is," Sawyer said.

Then he went to find a hotel room he couldn't afford, because he wouldn't leave Boston until Kit was out of intensive care.

Kit was out in four days.

On the fifth day I took the bus to Rockland with Pierce's anniversary watch in my coat pocket.

He'd given it to me a year ago at a dinner with his board. Gold, diamonds around the face.

He'd made a speech about time.

The pawnshop owner on Main Street held it under a lamp for a long time.

"Nine thousand," he said. "Cash."

"It cost forty."

"Not to me, it didn't."

I took the nine thousand.

That was two months of Kit's medicine, with a little left over for groceries.

I didn't cry on the bus back. I want that on the record.

I cried a little on the ferry, but it was windy, so it doesn't count.

Sawyer met the ferry in his truck with the heater running.

"How'd it go?"

"I sold time."

"Get a good price?"

"No."

"Nobody does," he said, and drove me to the hangar.

The hangar kitchen was a tin room bolted to the side of the hangar, with six tables, a counter, a woodstove and a sign that said NO POLITICS NO FISH TALK BEFORE 7AM.

Sawyer's grandmother ran it.

She was eighty-two, five feet tall, and wore a fleece vest over a flowered dress.

She took one look at me and pointed at a stool.

"Sit."

I sat.

She put a bowl of chowder in front of me the size of a hubcap.

"Eat."

"I'm not that..."

"You're thin as a fencepost and you're about to learn to fly again. Eat."

I ate. It was the best thing I'd had in five years of hotel dinners.

She watched me with her arms folded.

"You're the Ingalls girl. The older one."
