Chapter 12: The Empty Box

Catriona's POV

I laughed when I read the charge, and Alexander stared at me.

"Theft of the founder's ring," I said, waving the paper. "It's on my hand. It has my father's name in it."

"He knows that."

"He knows I'll hold it up in front of the pack. He wants me to." I put the paper down on the kitchen table beside the toast. "Which means he's afraid of something else."

My younger daughter had the charter open on her phone.

She read it aloud in her flat, careful voice.

"Line three. The seat of a founder's-blood Luna's mate holds only while the bond stands."

"That's what he's afraid of," I said.

"Then why not just win the vote?" Eliza asked. She was at the stove, burning toast.

"Because the vote will go to whoever the pack believes is the founder's heir," I said. "And he cannot afford for them to look at me and think of my father."

Alexander leaned against the counter with his coffee.

"Dora has the bottle," he said. "And I have the scar. That's the start of a case."

"It's a start of a challenge to the death."

He looked at me.

"Accusing an Alpha of poisoning a challenge, without proof the elders can hold, is a challenge by law," I said. "He picks the ground. You're forty-nine with a wolfsbane scar."
