Chapter 4: Ash Mountain

Alexander's kitchen had one mug, one frying pan, and a plant that had died standing up.

"You live alone," I said.

"I live with forty-one wolves," he said, cracking an egg into the pan. "None of them cook."

It was past three in the morning, and the Alpha of Ash Mountain was making eggs for his rival's cast-off wife and her daughter.

Eliza sat on the counter eating dry cereal out of the box.

"He's burning those," she told me.

"I'm browning them."

"They're black on the edges, Alpha."

"That's the flavor," Alexander said, and Eliza grinned, and I realized I had not seen her grin in a week.

I sat at the long table and put both hands around the cup he gave me.

My wolf lay in the back of my chest, calm and warm.

I did not trust it.

"I need to say something before I sleep here," I said.

Alexander turned from the stove.

"I pay my way," I said. "You have no clinic worth the name, and I have been a midwife for twenty years. Put me in the back room with a lamp and a blood pressure cuff, and I'll earn the bed."

"Done."

"No favors. Nobody here is allowed to treat me as a guest of the Alpha."

"Done."

"And you don't ask me for anything."

His face did not change, but he waited a moment before he answered.

"I won't ask you for anything," he said. "Not here, not under this roof. If you want something from me, you say so."

"I'm not going to."

"Then we'll never have a problem."
