Chapter 15: The Girl in the Background

Ye-won didn't knock.

Jang had given her the code to the penthouse door a week ago, and she used it.

It was 6:20 in the morning.

The living room was gray with dawn.

Tae-oh stood at the glass wall in a T-shirt and sweatpants, with a coffee cup in his hand.

He looked as though he had been waiting for her for hours.

He didn't turn around.

"Jang called," he said.

Ye-won walked to the glass table in the middle of the room.

She set the laptop down, opened it and turned the screen toward him.

0412_UNCROPPED glowed on the display, the long yellow corridor and the small gray figure at the end of it.

He looked at it.

Then he looked at her.

"Say it," she said.

"Ye-won."

"Say it out loud. I want to hear it."

His throat moved.

"It's you," he said. "It's always been you."

The cup slipped out of his hand and cracked on the floor.

Neither of them looked at it.

"How long?"

"Since the third day."

His voice was low and unsteady.

"I had Jang pull every frame from that night. Ma had told him to delete the stairwell shots, and he didn't."

"And?"

"He gave me that one. He said, this is the girl who was in the stairs with you."

"Three days. After the scandal."

"I had your scarf. I had your voice in my head, saying the thing about the breath."

He swallowed.

"I didn't have a name."

"So you looked for one."

"I hired a man to find you from a canvas bag. A patch on a strap."
