Chapter 11: The Roof
The roof of his house was a flat square of gravel and planks, with a low brick wall around it.
A gas heater stood beside a wide wooden lounge chair under a string of small lights.
He had not shown it to me until the first cold night in October.
"It's the only place in the neighborhood where you can see stars," Levan said, as we climbed the last flight with my hand in his. "I used to come up here after wrestling practice."
"You don't anymore?"
"Not alone."
He put his palm on the rail and took the last steps one at a time, slowly.
At the top he paused with his hand flat on the door frame before he walked out.
I noticed.
I told myself that men with a hurt knee do that.
The night was clear and cold, and Brooklyn lay spread out around us in lights.
The dark line of the bay lay to the south, and planes slid down toward Kennedy.
He turned on the heater.
He ran his hand over the lounge chair before he sat, and pulled a thick blanket off the back and shook it open.
"Come here," he said.
I sat between his legs with my back against his chest and the blanket over both of us.
The heater ticked.
His arms came around me and rested over my stomach, and neither of us said anything for a long while.
"My mother told me something before she died," I said.
"Tell me."
"She said girls in our family go quiet. Her mother went quiet. She went quiet. She said it's why we're so good at plating."
