Chapter 22: Her Face
Levan's POV
Our daughter was born at Coney Island Hospital on the third of June, in the early evening.
Ketevan had labored since four in the morning.
Natia had come off her shift and stayed in the room in her scrubs and white sneakers.
She had said nothing about the clock all day.
I stood at the head of the bed.
I had been there since the beginning, and I had not sat down.
The delivery room was all light.
There was a surgical lamp on an arm over the bed, and white panels in the ceiling.
On the wall was a reading lamp that a nurse had angled for me without being asked.
I could see the room.
I could see it better than I had seen any room in two years, and I was afraid of why.
"Levan," Ketevan said.
Her hair was wet and flat to her forehead, and her face was red and set.
She had her hand in mine, and she was crushing it.
