Chapter 24: Head of the Table
The last guest left at eleven, and Levan shut the front door and turned the lock.
I was sitting in the toastmaster's chair at the head of the long table, with my shoes off and my feet on the rung.
The silver horn lay on the cloth in front of me, empty.
The baby monitor on the sideboard breathed softly with our daughter's sleep.
Three lamps burned in the kitchen, and the one over the table shone down on the cloth.
Levan came and stood at the corner of the table, and he did not sit.
"Ask me again," I said.
"Ketevan Beridze," he said.
"Yes," I said.
"Stay with me," he said.
"Yes," I said.
He let out a long uneven breath.
"Just yes?"
"Yes, I'll stay. Yes, it's my house. Yes, I'll sit at the head of this table until I'm ninety, and you'll sit at my right hand and pass me the salt."
He laughed, and his eyes were wet.
"I start this one," I said.
"Of course you do."
I stood up and pushed the horn gently to one side.
The plates were already stacked in the sink.
I took the edge of the white cloth and drew it off the table and laid it over a chair.
The scarred wood lay bare under the lamp.
I sat on the edge of it, at the head, and put my feet up on the seat of the chair.
"Come here," I said.
He came.
He stood between my knees, and I took his shirt in both hands and pulled it open.
Buttons skittered across the floor.
