Chapter 10: The Back Room
Ilya read it over my shoulder.
He didn't say anything.
He got out of bed and started to dress, and every movement was slow and quiet and exact.
That was what frightened me.
He made three calls in Russian while he buttoned his shirt.
He took a gun out of the nightstand drawer, checked it, and put it at the small of his back.
Then he took a second one out and checked that too.
"Stay here," he said. "Lock the door."
"No."
"Shona."
"He asked for me. If you go in there with twenty men, he'll have a gun to her head before you're through the door." I was already pulling on my jeans. "If I walk in, he'll want to talk. He always wants to talk. He loves the sound of it."
"I'm not trading you for her."
"Nobody's trading anybody. I'm walking in the front. You're walking behind me."
He stopped with his cuff half-buttoned.
"And then?"
"Then I'm going to tell his mother what kind of son she raised."
He looked at me a long time.
Something in his face moved, almost a smile, very dark.
"Bellucci has no idea what he gave away," he said.
The restaurant on Hanover Street was full at lunch, the way it was every day.
Old men at the bar. Tourists by the window with cannoli boxes.
The long family table at the back, under the photo of Gianluca's grandfather shaking hands with a cardinal.
His mother sat at the head of it with a plate of escarole and a glass of red.
Two of Gianluca's captains sat on either side of her.
I walked in through the front door.
Ilya came in one step behind me.
Six of his men came in after him and spread out along the wall, and the whole room went silent.
A waiter dropped a tray.
