Chapter 37: The War
"You're allowed," I said.
"You held my hand last time. Nobody had to tell you."
He looked down at his own hand on my belly.
"Then I'll hold it again," he said.
We buried his driver on the Tuesday, in the snow in West Roxbury, two rows down from Misha.
Ilya stood at the grave with his hat in his hands.
He remembered this man.
He remembered him at twenty, teaching Misha to drive in a church parking lot.
He told the widow so in Russian while she held his sleeve.
He didn't remember the same man firing across a car hood at the curb to keep me alive.
So I told the widow that part myself, in my bad Russian, and she kissed both my hands.
On the path afterward I caught the grey-bearded brigadier by the arm.
"The one with no hair," I said. "And the boy with my stitches. Where are they?"
He looked at the cars, not at me.
"The one with no hair is in the harbor off Chelsea," he said. "The boy is on a plane to Petersburg, to his grandmother."
"Why the difference?"
"Your stitches." He shrugged. "A man you sewed, I don't put in the water. Is bad luck."
Ilya's phone rang before we reached the cars.
