Chapter 40: I Remember
Ilya's POV
The stone hit the side of my head where the bullet had been.
There was no pain.
There was a white sound.
Then the year came back.
It didn't come back the way the doctors said it might, a little at a time.
It came the way water comes through a door when the door gives.
All of it, at once, in the time it takes to fall.
A woman in a torn silver dress on a concrete floor, refusing my hand.
I'd gone into that warehouse meaning to kill Bellucci before he reached the door.
I didn't, because I wanted to see what she did next.
A brass key, and the second I chose to leave it on her side.
The pistol by my leg outside her room on the first night.
And the answer to the question I'd asked her in the dark.
I didn't use it because she was crying behind that door with her hands over her mouth, so the walls wouldn't hear her.
I'd stood there and listened to her try to be quiet in my house.
Then I went and made the tea, and my hands shook so badly I put in too much ginger.
A green line on a hospital monitor, going up and down, and a chair too small for me.
Her laugh in my kitchen at one in the morning, the first one, and how it frightened us both.
Her mouth on mine against the wall by the elevator.
Galina at the altar, telling me in Russian that if I ever made this girl cry she'd poison my soup.
My answer to her, which I'd meant with my whole body: then I'll eat it.
The crowns.
My daughter, wet and furious on my chest, with her fist against my scar.
