Chapter 23: Snowmelt

Wystan choked on his own breath.

Thad patted him on the back, hard, and looked down at the small, serious face turned up toward him.

"Where do cubs come from," he repeated.

"Yes. I need the answer for my list."

"You have a list?" asked Thad.

"I have a list of things I'm going to know by summer."

Tuck counted on his fingers.

"Why the spring is warm. What salt is. Where cubs come from."

"Those are three very different questions," Thad said.

"I know. That's why they're on the list."

Wystan made a faint noise in his throat.

Thad drew a long breath.

He had once managed the line at a wedding banquet for four hundred, and this was harder.

"Cubs come from people who want them," he said slowly. "Very much."

Tuck frowned.

"Dock came in a basket," said Tuck.

"He did. And the moment Wystan saw him in it, he wanted him. That's how Dock came to us."

"And me?"

"You came from your mother, Isa." Thad glanced at Wystan, who had gone quiet. "And she wanted you more than anything."

"She did," Wystan said, in a rough voice. "She talked about you for a year before you were born. She had your name picked out."

"What was it?"

"Tuck."

"Tuck?" The cub looked amazed. "That's the one I have."

"It is."

"Hm." Tuck lay down in the grass. "So you want, and then it comes."

"That's about right."

"Do we want another one?"
