Chapter 4: Two Years of Him

Lachlan lived in a brick house on a quiet street, and I had been inside it a hundred times.

I had never knocked on its door at nine at night with a folded paper in my fist.

He opened it in a gray sweater with the sleeves pushed up.

He looked at my face and then at the paper, and he stepped back to let me in.

"You went through my coat," he said.

"You wrote it down." I held the list up. "Let her choose. Choose what?"

He took the paper, read his own handwriting, and set it on the hall table.

"Come into the kitchen," he said. "Please."

The kitchen smelled like coffee and the rosemary he grew in the window.

I stayed standing.

He leaned against the counter across from me and folded his arms, and for once he did not look calm.

"I lied to you on Friday," he said. "I knew Tobias would be there. I put him there."

"Why?"

"Because for two years I have watched you across your father's dining table and told myself you were a child I used to push on a swing."

My stomach dropped.

"I was wrong," he said. "You aren't a child. You haven't been for a long time. And I'm forty, and your father's oldest friend, and I could not make myself stop."

I could hear the clock over the stove.

"You wanted me," I said. "For two years."

"Yes."

"And you put me on a table in a paper gown with your interns watching, as your idea of telling me."
