Chapter 5: The Footbridge

Nobody said anything on the step.

The rain came down on Tobias's shoulders and ran off his sleeves onto Lachlan's doormat.

"Come in," Lachlan said. "You're soaked."

"I'd rather say it out here."

Tobias looked at me.

"Two years ago, in the hotel hallway after the wedding, I told Lachlan I was in love with you."

My mouth fell open.

"He listened," Tobias said. "Then he told me I was your stepbrother, that I was twenty-five and had a residency to protect, and that your father would never forgive it. He made me swear I'd stay away from you."

"And you did," I said.

"I swore on it. I left the next week."

I turned to Lachlan.

He was holding the sweater against his chest, and he said nothing.

"You said that to him," I said. "While you were looking at me across the table every Sunday."

"Larissa."

"Wasn't that why?" Tobias said. He had gone very still. "Wasn't that the reason you told me to go?"

"It was part of the reason," Lachlan said.

"Which part?"

Lachlan met his eyes, and the silence went on a beat too long.

Tobias laughed once, a short ugly sound.

"Two years," he said. "I did two years in Chicago. I wrote her letters I didn't send."

"Tobias."

"And you had your hands on her tonight." He took a step forward and shoved Lachlan in the chest with both palms.
