Chapter 6: Nobody Decides for Me

Tobias felt me go still and lifted his head.

He followed my eyes down the bridge.

"Lachlan," he said, flat.

Lachlan began to walk toward us along the wet planks.

He did not hurry, and his hands stayed open and visible at his sides.

"I'll go," he said, when he was ten feet away. "I wanted to be sure you got here safe. I'll go."

"You followed us," Tobias said.

"Yes."

"You watched."

"Yes," Lachlan said. "I'm not going to pretend otherwise."

I straightened my shirt with hands that were not steady and pushed my hair back.

My mouth felt swollen.

I was standing between two men who had kissed me within the same hour, and I was not ashamed, and I was so angry I could barely see.

"Both of you listen to me," I said.

They looked at me.

"I am twenty-four years old. I restore books for a living, I pay my own rent, and I have been lied to by the two people who say they care about me most."

"Larissa," Tobias said.

"I'm not done." I held up one hand. "Two years. You both decided in a hotel hallway what I got to know and what I got to want. Lachlan, you built a room and put me in it. Tobias, you let me think you didn't care."

Neither of them moved.

"I'm not choosing tonight," I said. "I'm not promising anything to anyone. But from this moment, nobody decides for me. If I find out one of you has kept something from me, I'm done with both of you."
