Chapter 10: The Accord

Sabine's POV

The Stone stood in the middle of the grove, a waist-high block of grey granite older than the pines.

At dawn the Council came to it in a line of black cars.

Hester Quill walked at the front in her grey robe, with three elders behind her, and none of them looked at me.

My parents' caskets lay on the stone bed on either side.

I stood between them with my fever mostly gone and my shoulder aching.

Mathis stood across the Stone from me, with the leather tube in his hand.

"The Accord," Hester Quill said, "is read by the party who holds it, in the presence of the party it names."

"Then read it," I said.

He drew out the paper and unrolled it on the granite.

His voice was steady, and his hands were not.

"On this day, three years past, the Ardrey of the Iron Fang and the Draycott of Blackmoor lay down arms at the Eastern Border," he read. "The war is ended. The border is closed. In return the Ardrey grants this."

He stopped and cleared his throat.

"After three years, the Ardrey daughter, Sabine, will walk her parents' rites with the Alpha of Blackmoor. She will bring her mother's ruby, and he will bring its other half. If the halves are one, she is pledged to him as Luna of Blackmoor, and the peace holds for her life and his."

I did not breathe.

"Until that day, her scent is sealed, that no other Alpha may claim her. Until that day, the Ardrey dead rest in Blackmoor's keeping."

He lowered the page.

"It is signed by her father in his own hand, and sealed with her mother's seal."

For a long moment the wind was the only sound.
