Chapter 23: The Choice

I walked out of the Circle of Stone alone, the way I had on the day of the coronation.

This time nobody called me back.

The wolves parted on either side of the road, and I went down between them with my hands empty.

Mathis did not follow.

I felt him on the other end of the mark the whole way, still as a stone.

I drove a borrowed car to the Eastern Border.

My parents lay under two plain markers among the Iron Fang dead, with the grass already starting over the earth.

I sat down between them.

"The Accord is void," I told the graves. "The Council is gone. I can go anywhere."

The wind moved in the pines.

"Where would you go?" I asked my father. "You always had a plan."

I thought of what he would say.

He would say that I had spent three years hiding to be loved as a smaller thing, and that I had finally been loved as a larger one, and that I should not be stupid about it.

I laughed, and cried, and wiped my face on my sleeve.

I had a pack and a company and a name that was mine.

I had no cage.

The only thing I wanted in the world was a man who would not follow me out of a ring.

I took out my phone.

The last time I asked a man to stand beside me, it was Corbin, in front of the whole Circle, and he said he would be there, and he was not.
