Chapter 7: One Tent

We drove east at dusk in his truck, with my parents' caskets in the two trucks behind us.

Neither of us said a word for an hour.

The border grove lay where the road ended, a ring of old black pines around a bare patch of earth.

The Blackmoor wolves laid the caskets side by side on a bed of stones, then withdrew to the road.

That left the tent.

It was a single canvas tent, pitched at the edge of the clearing with one lantern hanging at the door.

"The rite says one tent," Mathis said. "One fire, three nights, no one else within shouting distance."

"Who wrote that rule?"

"Your father."

I looked at him.

He did not smile.

"He was a careful man," he said.

I lit the fire with my own hands, because I wanted something to do.

The night came down cold and clear, and the stars stood out over the pines.

We ate bread and dried meat from a pack he had brought, sitting on opposite sides of the flames.

"You held them for three years," I said.

"Yes."

"In a crypt."

"In a stone room, with the temperature kept low and the door sealed. No one touched them." His voice was level. "I went in on the first day of each month and told them the news."

I stared at the fire.

"You told them the news."

"Your father liked to hear it." He turned a piece of wood with his boot. "He is the only enemy I ever respected."
