Chapter 18: The Walkouts

The black car pulled up outside the duplex at five minutes to two.

I watched it from Brodie's front window in his team hoodie.

"You're not going," Brodie said behind me.

It wasn't a question, so I didn't answer it.

I went down the outside stairs barefoot.

The driver was already out, standing by the back door with his hands folded.

Grey hair, heavy shoulders, the same way of rocking on his heels.

"Miss Olivia," he said.

He hadn't called me that since I was twelve.

"I'm not getting in."

"I figured." He looked up at Brodie's lit window, then back at me. "Your father said wait till you come down."

"Then you'll be waiting a while."

He nodded slowly.

Then he opened the back door and took a thermos off the seat and held it out.

"Hot chocolate. Lorna packed it. She said you'd say no."

I took it.

"Did you drive Brielle up for the dedication too?"

"I drive whoever he tells me to," he said. "Have since before either of you."

He got back in the car and turned off the engine.

He was still sitting there at six, when I gave up pretending to sleep.
