Chris did not have to go looking.
Within the hour, the dean's secretary called his phone and asked him to come to the small conference room.
His mother held his sleeve at the door.
"I'll wait in the hall," she said.
"I'll be right here."
Inside, Leander's father sat at the head of the table with his gloves folded in front of him.
He was perhaps fifty, tall and lean, with gray in his hair and pale green eyes.
He did not stand up.
"Mr. Chesbro," he said. "Sit down."
Chris remained standing.
"I understand you are the reason my son has been behaving like a fool."
"I don't think so, sir."
"The dean told me what she thinks. She told me you returned eight hundred dollars."
"Yes."
"That was your first intelligent act."
